Flux Limitations of Continuous Atom Lasers

چکیده
If atom lasers are to transform many fields of physics, as well as find applications in industry, the most essential development needed is increased atom flux. In this thesis we report on the experimental observation of fundamental limits on the flux of continuous atom lasers. The flux produced by the commonly used radio frequency outcoupler, can not be arbitrarily increased by increasing the strength of the outcoupling. Above a critical Rabi frequency, the atom laser shows large classical density fluctuations, due to coupling between the multiple Zeeman states. In our system this critical Rabi frequency is ∼ 1 kHz. Futhermore, at large coupling strengths (> 4 kHz for our experimetnal parameters), the continuous atom laser output completely switches off, as a result of the atoms remaining trapped in a bound state. In addition to the investigations of the radio frequency outcoupler, we have demonstrated the first continuous Raman outcoupled atom laser. Preliminary data indicates that the Raman outcoupler will be flux limited in a similar way to the radio frequency outcoupler.

Fluctuations and flux: The limits of multistate atom lasers
By direct comparison between experiment and theory with no adjustable parameters, we show how the classical fluctuations on a multistate atom laser beam increase with increasing flux. The fluctuations are inherent to state changing out coupling, rf, Raman, or otherwise and are likely to be present in all atom lasers, pulsed or continuous, that employ such out coupling. If not removed or avoided...
متن کاملA quasi-monomode guided atom-laser from an all-optical Bose-Einstein condensate
We report the achievement of an optically guided and quasi-monomode atom laser, in all spin projection states (mF = −1, 0 and +1) of F = 1 in rubidium 87. The atom laser source is a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a crossed dipole trap, purified to any one spin projection state by a spin-distillation process applied during the evaporation to BEC. The atom laser is outcoupled by an inhomogenou...
متن کاملAtom lasers and phase coherence of atomic Bose gases
Using continuous radio-frequency waves a coherent beam of atoms can be extracted from a magnetically trapped gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate. These novel atomic beams have matter-wave properties that are very similar to those of laser light in classical optics and are therefore called atom lasers. Furthermore, coupling out atoms from a Bose gas allows one to probe the dramatic changes in the p...

We study the scattering of two-level atoms at narrow laser fields, modeled by a δ-shape intensity profile. The unique properties of these potentials allow us to give simple analytic solutions for one or two field zones. Several applications are studied: a single δ-laser may serve as a detector model for atom detection and arrival-time measurements, either by means of fluorescence or variations ...
متن کاملCandlestick rubidium beam source
Many atomic physics laboratories rely on beams of alkali atoms for their experiments, for example in the atom optics and laser cooling communities. Rubidium is commonly used, due to the fortunate coincidence of the dipole resonant transition with the optimum output wavelength of low-cost AlGaAs semiconductor lasers. Suitable rubidium beams can easily be produced with effusive ovens, but many ex...
